THE 3 PHASES OF SODIUM CHLORIDE -- SALT

1. SOLID
NaCl is an ionic crystal at room temperature, with its sodium and chlorine atoms arranged in almost a regular array we call a "lattice". Because of thermal agitation, the atoms vibrate, but they remain close to their preferred positions on the lattice. Rotate the structure and you will notice that there are well-defined planes. The crystal cleaves easily along these directions.
2. LIQUID
At 800C, NaCl melts into a liquid. In the liquid state, the regular lattice structure of the solid is completely lost, but the mobility of the atoms remain low. In other words, the liquids is still quite viscous.
3. GAS
At 1400C, NaCl boils and becomes a gas. The gaseous state has no regular order and atoms travel large distances without interacting with one another. In fact, in most gases, the atoms are so far apart that they can be considered noninteracting. We call this the "ideal gas" behavior.
