Excerpts From 350 Letter

The defense kept copies of more than 350 letters and affidavits sent to the U.S. District Court in Brownsville in support of Jimmy Keller and his clinic. The following excerpts are not complete or necessarily the best. They are just some that struck me as I read through them.

"I have been a member of the Legislature for 20 years. My friendship with Jimmy began when we worked together to get legislative approval for the use of Laetrile treatment for cancer victims in the late 1970's. Jimmy himself has suffered terribly from cancer and had been diagnosed as incurable. When his life was saved thru the treatments he received, he committed his life to helping others who were suffering too. Jimmy is the kind of man who has always reached out to people that others have given up on. I do not believe he would ever do anything intentionally to hurt another human being."

"I say in all truth that I owe my life to him. . . . My treatment at St. Jude's caused my tumor to disappear completely, and to this day, I am free of any cancer in my body, as witness a copy of my most recent PSA . . . . Jimmy is a caring, loving and spiritual man who has been completely selfless in his dedication to all of us who were fortunate enough to come under his care."

"I had been diagnosed two different times by the medical doctors, after chemo and radiation, as having, probably, three months to live. . . . I am known as a medical miracle in this area . . . . I know that I am not a medical miracle but a Jimmie Keller miracle."

"My wife had a 20 year history of excruciating headaches. She had been to numerous doctors and specialists without any lasting relief. When she was treated by Mr. Keller she got the first lasting relief ever -- without having to take drugs. He charged us only a minimal amount, far less than the treatments even cost him, with an understanding that we would pay when we could.

I saw many others who were helped by Mr. Keller when no help or hope was supposed to be possible. I saw a man dedicated to helping others and saving lives working with little sleep under oppressive conditions doing his best to help. I don't know what he was found guilty of, but I do know that Jimmy Keller is one of the most unselfish helpers of man it has been my honor to have met. Probably his biggest crime was in not looking out for his own well-being because he was so concerned for others."

". . . While down there I witnessed many people improving with their diseases, and in the sadder situations where [they] had failed with medical procedures to improve and were close to death, he made their last days more comfortable and less painful.

". . . Mr. Keller always showed nothing but willingness to do what was needed to help including an 18-20 hr per day schedule when needed."

. . . Your decision regarding Jimmy Keller is more far reaching than its effect on his personal welfare. Alternative physicians, health practitioners and those of the public that are knowledgeable about what has been taking place in America are praying that you and others in your position will see the full scope of the problem. Freeing Jimmy Keller will provide a much needed stimulus at this important time in American medicine."

" . . . He carried the heavy responsibility of trying to change [his patients'] lives of depression to an attitude of believing life was worth living. A heavy burden of responsibility which he willingly assumed. I don't believe money could motivate any man to take on such a voluntary assignment. I saw and heard patients talking and encouraging other patients on how Jimmy's therapy had helped them and gave them great moral and physical support."

"I had cancer of the lymph glands. . . . Jimmy helped me out of my darkest hour. That was a year and a half ago. Jimmy has been a friend to many others in their darkest hour. I have seen him work long hours and help many. He would treat patients even if they could not afford it, myself included. Jimmy let me pay what I could afford. I never saw him turn anyone away who asked for help, regardless of their financial condition."

". . . [K]nowing some people with serious conditions . . . I mentioned Jimmy to them and they went to see him . . . .

"The first man had one leg and was about to lose the other one, due to an apparent incorrectible circulation problem. He was facing amputation of his second leg, when he visited Jimmy Keller. That must have been close to 10 years ago, and he still has his leg.

"The other person was a man with cancer who had been sent home to die. His pain was so great that morphine would no longer stop it. After seeing Keller for a few weeks, I got a phone call from his wife. She spoke through tears of joy, as she told me that her husband's color was back, he'd gained 14 pounds and [was] down to only 2 aspirin a day for pain, instead of morphine.

"Granted, healing cancer and saving legs without being a doctor is illegal -- but is it really wrong? . . . Regardless what the charges are, and regardless what [illegible] statements you may have heard from pro-AMA and FDA sources, healing cancer, and doing it cheaply by comparison, is his crime."

"I met Jimmy Keller in February of 1990 after I had been diagnosed as having Invasive Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The surgery and possible radiation that had been recommended to me by my doctor seemed a bit drastic to me, so I sought an alternative form of treatment which would heal the causes, not just remove the symptoms. I had not been able to work because of the cancer, did not have any medical insurance, and live alone. . . . Jimmy took me as a patient anyway. . . . I truly believe that I would not be alive today if it were not for Jimmy Keller and the treatment which he so lovingly gave to me."

"Prior to seeing Mr. Keller, I did a fair amount of research into the methods he used for treatment. I found that they were widely used with excellent results in Scandinavia, Europe, Japan and South America. They involved natural substances with little or no side effects, and improved the body's immune system to the point where it could combat injuries and diseases without the use of drugs. It seems his biggest crime was in becoming famous, and in using phones to conduct his business. "I personally met over a hundred people at his clinic whose lives he had saved. His methods rehabilitated my injury in six weeks . . . . I know that many patients were given treatments at no cost."

"I have seen Jimmy pull . . . 'two weeks to a month to live' cases out of the jaws of death and give them back full and healthy lives . . . . Unknown to many is that he has also successfully treated two AIDS cases. . . . [H]e holds valuable pieces of the equation to both of these epidemics."

". . . I lost a 5 year old daughter in 1968, and my mother at age 59 in 1975 to cancer, and both endured long suffering from the ravages of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Conversely, I have a 19 year old daughter who at age 14 was diagnosed with 40% arterial blockage; an 84 year old father who suffered a stroke and 7 years ago was repeatedly recommended for arterial surgery; and a wife who was diagnosed with breast and lymphatic cancer 6 years ago; all of whom are very alive and very well and all of whom received treatment from Jimmy Keller exclusively since their diagnosis.

". . . It is unconscionable to acknowledge that surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy do not cure cancer and then to legally bind sufferers to no alternative selections. . . . [We] continue to pour billions into dead end and economic driven research, chasing mythical, technological, one pill cures while persecuting those who . . . with true compassion are genuinely healing."

"I had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. Mr. Keller accepted me at his clinic and when I had financial difficulty and could not pay him, he treated me for free for several months. . .

. Mr. Keller has treated many people for free. . . . Jimmy Keller provided rational advice for me at a time when I was under considerable emotional upset and unsure of what I should do about my own illness. I don't believe that these are the characteristics or operating modes of a quack. . . . I am presently in superb health."

". . . I never heard Jimmy promise any cure nor did he promise any specific results from his treatment. . . . I have also seen him turn away several potential clients by stating he knew he could NOT help their particular condition. This is not the attitude of a so-called 'bilker' or 'schemer' to defraud individuals of fortunes or millions of dollars.

" . . . [T]he law without a heart, without understanding and consideration of true intent leaves us all in a sad state of flux not knowing where truth and integrity abide. . . . This is a man who thought he was going to die 22 years ago, found life through alternative treatment and dedicated his life to helping others. You will never know as I do the extra hours and weekends he gave up for darn little money to help others."

"My family and I have had my Grandmother two years longer than the doctors said. My family and I pray to have Jimmy Keller released, so he can continue to help others live longer, as well as my Grandmother. I thank the Lord for Jimmy Keller because I still have my Grandmother.

". . . My wife and myself had been going to Dr. Elizabeth Huntly in La Crescenta on a nutrition program. Dr. Huntly who has her PhD. in nutrition happened to comment that on four (4) occasions she had sent patients with cancer to Jim Keller . . . . She said all four were cured.

". . . I spoke with a number of patients . . . . Some had come in with large and/or painful cancers and spoke of how their cancer had shrunk or disappeared altogether. The previously sick had been cured by Jim Keller and would annually make the trek to St. Jude's for maintenance therapy.

". . . He made you feel that the two of you were going to attack this thing together. There were no promises but there was no negativity either. At the end he would give the patient a hug and say 'God Bless You.'

". . . What this guy has accomplished is really exciting and I hope the start of a new

approach to cancer treatment -- one that involves love and the willingness to utilize drugs which have been found effective in other parts of the world in actually curing patients without having to use surgery, chemotherapy or radiation -- cut, poison, or burn."

"Many times the patient waited too long, usually out of the panic of the diagnosis, to come to Jimmy. Other doctors gave up on these patients, but not Jimmy. These people that are alive today are literally 'living testimonies' to his gift of healing . . . . Jimmy Keller's sole concern was not power, fame, or fortune, but the health and welfare of every individual that walked, or was carried, into his clinic."

"I have found in my dealings with Mr. Keller that his sole purpose in life is to help others.

He has done this without regard for the other person's ability to pay. . . . From my observation he spent 12-16 hours a day working at helping people in need, and regularly got little sleep -- much less than the normal eight hours a night. . . .

"From my viewpoint, Mr. Keller is a very dedicated healer and his knowledge of nutrition and vitamins is a very valuable asset to society. It would be a great shame to lose or waste this knowledge by sentencing Mr. Keller to a prison term."

"He has helped many, many people -- among them myself, who my California doctor said I only had three months to live. That was nearly seven years ago. I went to Jimmy Keller in Tijuana and received his treatments. I am alive and well today because of him."

". . . His treatments work. I wish he could practice in America, so that I could see him more often."

"I live in Florida and travel[ed] to see him 5 times in the last 5 years. Despite the fact that I could not afford as many treatments that was needed, he never turned me away and treated me lovingly and made me feel alive once more. Isn't it unfair for people who have never encountered a near death experience to take away our choice of treatment?"

". . . I told him I did not have the funds to pay for his services. He told me not to worry.

By the end of six days I felt like a new person. My strength, vitality and the will to live had returned. I can honestly say I don't think I would be in good physical health today if it were not for Jimmy Keller's help."

". . . I talked with the accountant and told him I'd like to stay more than the three days which I had planned, but since I was on Social Security, and didn't have much money, I wouldn't be able to. The accountant said to me, 'Don't worry about the money. As long as you are here, stay and if you can, at a later date, you can send some money.' So I stayed 2-1/2 weeks, and received health benefits. While I was there I met other people who were not paying anything."

". . . [I]t was never necessary for him to call anyone to get them to go to his clinic, he had all the people he could treat without calling anyone to come to the clinic."

"I have observed him on many occasions . . . help those without Health Coverage, without money, or Underwriters protection of any kind. No one was turned away . . . . This man should be honored rather than trampled. Please help to restore the faith in what we teach as our Criminal Justice system by aiding Mr. Keller to be FREE."

"I have known the above named defendant for over 20 years. I have known Jimmy's mother, daddy, and most of his family for about the same time. He comes from a very devout family. Jimmy has always been sincere in helping others, even when he knew they did not have the money to pay him."

". . . I met Jimmy Keller as a cancer patient through my mother and father, Charles and Dot Pearce, whom he had effectively lead to health . . . . I did not take conventional medical treatment and I am fine after many years.

". . . I personally know that when something good happens to you, you have an evangelistic zeal to share it with others . . . and I know he was not doing what he was for the money involved because he has helped many with no compensation whatsoever."

"I accepted treatment at Jimmy's clinic at a time when I was unable to pay him. He knew this and he treated me anyway at great cost to him. I felt better afterwards than I ever felt in my life and am doing very well today."

". . . Jimmy surely seemed to be quite candid and conservative, so I was surprised and disappointed that he had been found guilty of fraud. I feel sure that he could produce many more favorable witnesses than the opposition; but I understand many of his were not called to testify even though they made the long and expensive trip there for that purpose.

". . . [W]e personally saw huge tumors on necks and bodies greatly reduced or disappear . . . and many previously forlorn people developed new hope and vigor as the treatments began having effect. . . . I am considerably saddened and disconcerted over Mr. Keller's recent arrest . . . . He was given no time to handle his affairs in Mexico, leaving many ill people in his clinic unattended."

". . . His sole purpose in life, despite incredible and crippling opposition, seems to be to help others. Even when threats were made on his life, even when his fiancee was held at knifepoint, even after being beaten with a lead pipe, Jimmy kept getting up in the morning and serving others' needs. He couldn't let his patients down.

"I have been a patient of Jimmy's and he has . . . greatly helped me. I have referred dozens of people to him and ALL have benefitted, one for one."

"I was a patient of Jimmy's in Mexico when the F.B.I. closed in on him in Rosarito here a few years ago. I wasn't able to finish my treatments because of his having to go into hiding. . . . As a widow I couldn't afford what others were paying and he helped me by letting me help the others at the Clinic. . . . I think it is terrible that our freedoms are being taken from us."

". . . [I]t was on that morning on March 18th that men came and forcibly took him away. . . . I saw that one had a gun and threatened to use it.

". . .[M]any . . . with whom I keep in touch desperately miss and need the treatment Jimmy Keller has to offer. I saw a 29 year old woman with lung cancer delighted after 3 weeks treatment that her signs of cancer were gone.

". . . Jimmy knew that my present situation prevented me from having the money to pay him and accepted my promise to pay later. We just received our itemized statements on Saturdays. No one to my knowledge was required or even requested to pay 'up front.'

". . . Most people who go to him are already terminal, so why is he blamed because some die? It is remarkable that so many live. What happens to doctors who administer highly toxic drugs and questionable treatments which make a patient miserable during his remaining time?

". . . He is a God fearing, honest, gifted, sympathetic, generous man who deeply loves and cares about people in need. He himself has been there, knows what it is like and wants to be able to offer hope and life to others. To how many members of the jury could that previous sentence apply?"

"I know that the law takes into account the intent behind any act. Surely, any one who knows Jimmy Keller or who has heard his story, or had the benefit of his help, as I have, would know his intent was always to help and not hurt."

"Jimmy was not only instrumental in saving my life, he taught me how to live. He helped me psychologically, spiritually and was the person who told me I could do anything I wanted to."

" . . . [I am a] builder and developer, with 40 years experience building. We have built numerous hospitals, both general and convalescent, with many churches, shopping centers, custom homes, etc. My wife Dorothy has spent 30 years in the medical field . . . . We have seen literal miracles happen at Jimmie Keller's Clinic! . . .

"My best friend, Dwight, an associate builder for 40 years, was sent home to die, from Loma Linda U. Medical Center. . . . At his request, we took this man to the Mexican Clinic, and stayed 3 weeks with him and his wife. We saw him able to [get] up out of his deathbed and walk.

"Another dear friend, from Sonora, California, Betty, had been given 3 months to live; she had three brain tumors, and a huge tumor covering her liver. We took Betty and her husband in our motor home . . . . Prior to going there, she could not use her left hand, or control her left foot. . . . [A]fter her treatments in Mexico she was able to use left arm and leg, could play the piano, and walk. That was 3 years ago.

"A year ago we took an 82-year old friend, Adolph, with bladder cancer. His color was grey, and he walked with a cane. Now his color is normal, he doesn't know where his cane is, and he is out driving his tractor. . . .

"We know of cases, who couldn't afford to pay for their treatments in Mexico, who were treated Free! How many doctors and clinics here would do that?? Not many.

"We earnestly pray to God in Heaven, that you will deal kindly with this fine man, who wefeel really deserves the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE for his Humanitarian efforts to help his fellow man."

"On two occasions I personally talked with family members who had brought their loved ones to the clinic for evaluation. They were sorely disappointed when Jimmy told them he felt he could not help them. When they suggested trying, he said they would be wasting their money.

"Shortly after my arrival at Jimmy's clinic, I informed him I was living on disability income and could only afford to pay a fixed sum each week, an amount significantly below his usual charge. He accepted this immediately and without questioning. In the following weeks he added many expensive medications to my treatment program in an attempt to help me, knowing that he would not be reimbursed for them. I have talked with several other patients who had comparable experiences."

Whether Jimmy Keller is guilty or innocent of the charges against him seems less important to me than the effect his punishment will have not against Jimmy but against Freedom of Choice, and against this whole country once Jimmy's story is brought to nationwide and worldwide attention .

"I was treated at Jimmie Keller's clinic for breast cancer the latter part of last year. The cancer was eliminated and I had no ill effects from the treatment. I found him to be a very kind and gentle person who only thought of helping other people. He succeeded in doing this for a number of people while I was there. Everyone of those people only had good things to say about Jimmy Keller and his clinic."

". . . [My mother] had received radiation every day for 33 times (her neck looked like raw meat). After going through this painful ordeal, which by the way inhibited her ability to swallow because of the continuous sore throat and destruction of the salivary glands, she was asked to receive chemotherapy indefinitely. Being a nurse myself, I knew what they were offering: only doom. I begged her not to continue during the fifteen weeks she went. I could see her dying each time I'd come for a visit with the rapid weight loss. Five specialists offered her expensive medical bills.

"After hearing about Jimmy Keller, she asked my dad if he would drive her down to Mexico. The decision was hers alone . . . . She told me after her first treatment she became very hungry, which was remarkable, since she [had lost] her appetite for over a year. She returned home after several herbal treatments and is doing remarkable.

"Our whole family thanks God and Jimmy Keller . . . . I believe Jimmy has devoted his life for the sole purpose of helping others recover from the deadly disease called cancer. He never claimed to be a healer, but uses herbs which God put on this earth to use and not poisonous chemicals."

"I have been diagnosed as having lung cancer and told that nothing could be done. Jimmy Keller has treated me with Tumorex and really did help me. As far as I am concerned, Jimmy is a caring and thoughtful individual and has sincerely helped me in my fight against cancer."

". . . [W]e were not promised a cure by Jimmy Keller or any of his staff. . . . Several days into the treatment, Jimmy Keller offered to return our money because he felt my son was not benefiting from the treatment. We chose to stay and Jimmy Keller and his associates expended considerably more time and effort on my son than would have been expected."

"I have seen and know a number of people who have been treated by Mr. Keller and have benefited greatly, especially in gaining hope for living, which the medical doctors could not give them. It is ridiculous to know that he is being accused of fraud, criminal intent and malicious conduct. It is a blotch on the image of a free country that dying and suffering people have no freedom to choose alternative methods of treatment or therapy. A country founded on godly principles and human rights is freedom deficient when a union-like medical establishment and government oppress and persecute those who pioneer and promote new ideas and modalities not approved by the orthodox establishments."

" . . . We decided to go to Matamoros, Mexico for treatment in July 1983. When we talked to Maxine Louder about the treatment she told us there were no guarantees and she couldn't promise we would get well . . . . My condition was diagnosed as terminal with no hope of a cure. . . . I went back to the doctor who found the cancer originally for a physical examination. He could find no tumor in my lung and felt that I had been cured. He took several x-rays." [The medical records for this examination were attached. They showed "history of tumor, no evidence for recurrence at present time."]
