At the Peoples' Primal Potluck held on January 21, 2001, I, Karl Loren, had the opportunity to ask my question of Aajonus, and did. I asked the question: "What are the exact mechanics of the detoxification brought about by the Raw Animal Food Diet?"
Aajonus answered my question, then went on to elaborate a bit, and finally came back to me to ask if he had answered the question to my satisfaction.
I said, "Let me repeat YOUR answer in my words to see if I did understand the answer."

I did repeat what I thought was the answer, but it turned out I still had it wrong, and he re- stated the answer in what I considered a very revelatory way. It finally got through to me. I marveled! Lights went on! |

This, to me, has been the cornerstone of the Aajonus Diet -- the detox process brought about, apparently by eating raw meat, raw eggs, and various combinations of foods recommended by Aajonus. Even though I was certain that it occurred, I didn't understand why.
After I completed writing this page I asked Aajonus to review it, since I was attempting to repeat what I understood he had said. He did review it, and gave me this comment:

I want to repeat his answer, here on the page, but before I do that I want to share with you some false information and limited viewpoints I had had on this subject. It may be that few if any others will have misunderstandings, or confusions similar to mine, but it may also be true that others had been looking at this issue from the same "fog" that I was in.

And, since I am predominately an author, always striving to find ways to explain health issues that are understandable to my public, I am approaching this question as a major writing project on my part, suitable as part of my regular web pages. You understand that Aajonus' answer was ultimately very brief; you will see a greatly expanded "quote" down below, but I didn't get this when he said it the first time, and I didn't get it when I read his Book, We Want To Live. |
So, I realized that as far as I was concerned I had accumulated so much false data on detoxification that I was unable to accept some true data without first identifying the falseness of my existing data.
So, let's look at what I had considered to be true first.
Obviously this word, "detoxification" means as the roots indicate "out" or "away" for the "de" prefix of the word, and "toxin" for the root of the word. We don't have to look for more complicated meanings -- this word simply refers to some "process" by which toxins are removed from the body (or possibly are rendered less toxic without leaving the body).
The word is often abbreviated as "detox" and you can say that you have gone through a "detox program" when you follow some procedure designed to rid the body (or neutralize) certain types of toxins.
For many years I have been researching and writing about such a "process." I call it "oral chelation" -- a process I have written a book about, and about which I have published thousands of pages on my web sites. My published pages include hundreds of pages of scientific studies which establish the main-line science on which "oral chelation" is based.
Since I have written those many thousands of page, I can easily write, here, a few paragraphs to describe this procedure.
Hang in there -- you'll see that I am about to describe MY whole business as possibly a "lesser" form of detoxification compared to the RAF diet!

My concept of heart disease is not unique, but it is a concept held by a tiny minority of people who write about heart disease. Most "experts" on heart disease write about the dangers of foods containing too much fat, particularly too much cholesterol, and suggest that these diets lead to a dangerously high level of cholesterol in the blood, and that these high levels lead to death by heart disease. When I first started studying this situation, some 20 years ago, I soon realized that the above was a very false representation of the actual heart disease situation. I wrote and published a 400 page book, called Life Flow One, The Solution For Heart Disease. That Book, still available in print form, is now also published on its own web site at http://www.oralchelation.net . |
My research went on well past the publication of my book, and I now have seven web sites filled with 13,000 pages of health information, much of it to prove the falsity of the traditional view of heart disease (as caused by foods high in cholesterol), and explain the scientific rationale for my own, very different view of heart disease.
I was, as stated, not the first to propound my concept of heart disease. The first place I found it was in the famous book (second edition) of Bypassing Bypass, by Dr. Elmer Cranton. When I read his first edition, about 1981, I accepted it as true, and shortly after that I founded an entire new career to develop a vitamin formula that would solve the heart disease problem, based in part on what Dr. Cranton had written. I developed my first "oral chelation" formula.
Then Dr. Cranton published the second edition of his Book, in about 1993, and I was astounded at the dramatic change he made from his previous explanation of heart disease. But, as I checked it out, I agreed with it and that is when I wrote my book, Life Flow One. It turned out that although my earlier explanation of heart disease had been wrong, my solution was still "right."
What is this new concept? It involves "free radicals." If you click on the top line of the picture caption, you'll get some explanation of this toxic substance, Hydrogen Sulfide, and how it causes free radical damage in the body.

It is simple. The concept I share with Dr. Cranton, and many others (but by no means any large percentage of cardiologists) was that heart disease was caused by free radical damage to the individual cells in the arteries.

This free radical damage would often be to the DNA, or the RNA inside individual cells. The picture on the right shows the molecular model of the DNA -- each ball here is an atom, the electrons are not shown. You see the DNA as an extremely complicated structure, and there would be thousands of electrons moving around the various atoms. A free radical simply adds one electron, or removes one, from this structure. Perhaps nothing happens! Perhaps something happens! Whatever the various forms this damage would take, one consequence of the damage might often be that this individual cell began to lose some of its strength. One of the jobs of these cells was the constant pumping of fluids and nutrients INTO the cell, and the waste products OUT OF the cell. As calcium was pushed into a cell, or sucked in, and the cell became weak from free radical damage, the cell might lose some of its ability to get rid of that calcium. |
So, you can picture these individual cells in the arteries of your body, as little pumps that took in and then pushed out, various fluids and items.
One of the items that was constantly being pulled (or pushed) into a cell would be calcium -- as well as many other items.

By that time the calcium inside the cell might well be much higher in quantity than it ought to be -- the excessive calcium would, in turn, add to the problems of the cell already damaged by free radicals. Soon you might have a cell that has actually died in a "calcified" condition. |
More often you would have a cell that was still alive, but functioning very poorly and unable to get rid of the excessive calcium inside the cell.
This excessive calcium INSIDE the cell would show up on an MRI scan as a white layer that would APPEAR to be on the outside of the cells -- it was considered to be outside the cell because the MRI cannot begin to distinguish the thickness of the cell membrane. This cell membrane is only about the thickness of a spider web -- the MRI cannot see any difference between calcium inside a cell versus calcium outside a cell.
It all looks like, and was called "plaque."
If you perform an autopsy on such a person, you would, indeed, find what appears to be a "layer" of cholesterol and calcium (called plaque) but you would MISS seeing that this apparently homogenous material is actually made up of individual cells -- and that the cholesterol and calcium are actually INSIDE these cells.
So, you had a "build-up" of plaque, made up of calcium and cholesterol, supposedly, and that stuff got thicker and thicker until the artery was blocked and you died of a stroke or heart attack.
But, that same calcium, on the inside of the cells instead of outside, could still cause the artery to become much less flexible, unable to change size as blood needs changed, and generally caused a reduction in blood flow -- causing a stroke or heart attack.
This is not some mysterious science, but is the view held by many quite reputable (if a minority) scientists and doctors.

Now, where did those free radicals come from?
|
Those who have studied free radicals know that the environment is full of them, and that they penetrate into the body by the millions. Many are even created within the body. Some of them play vital roles of PROTECTING the health of the body.
I have done hundreds of hours of research and writing on the phenomenon of "free radicals."
But, leaving aside much of the data, for here, let me just say that 300 years ago our bodies did NOT have the large number of free radicals we have today. There are lots of reasons for this, only one of which is taken up here.
So, what has changed in the last 300 years that would cause a great increase in the number or of the activity of free radicals in the body?
One amazing answer!

Heavy metals! Toxic metals! |
Our bodies, now, are loaded with metals -- metals that just didn't exist in our bodies 300 years ago. It would be another whole presentation to describe where they come from and how they get lodged inside the body.
Remember, these are the size of atoms and molecules -- tiny! But they are metals.
Some are floating around in the fluids of the body -- many are "lodged" in the tissues of the body (the heart, lungs, organs, skin, etc.). Since they are the size of atoms and molecules, you'd never see them in any type of microscope. (Also, as you can realize, there could never be any medical drug that would remove these -- since medical drugs more often introduce toxic metals into the body than take them out.)
Now here is the important data you need to know about toxic metals and free radicals.
When a free radical hits some bone, or tissue, or other part of the body it may be neutralized (as when it hits Vitamin C), with no new free radical, or it may appear to be neutralized but in fact a new free radical emerges after the collision.

Thus, free radicals are said to exist in a chain reaction -- NOT YET similar to the atomic bomb -- one free radical hits something, and only one new free radical is created. It hits something and another NEW free radical is created. The time between these "hits" would be measured in millionths of seconds! These things move almost with the speed of light and "live" for only a very brief time. But, these "single" chain reactions mean that your body is constantly being bombarded, in random locations, with free radical chain reactions. |
As this all happens randomly, what happens when one free radical hits a piece of toxic metal in the body?
Instead of one new free radical, you can have hundreds or thousands of NEW free radicals created. THIS is what is comparable to the fission chain in the atomic bomb.
Thus, metals are multipliers of the number and activity of free radicals in the body.
Finally, you see the point.
Your body has been loaded with metal toxins that ultimately cause a great increase in free radicals, and that large number of free radicals greatly increases the damage done to the arteries.
Now, we can simply claim that free radicals cause heart disease (and cancer), and that this is, in turn, caused by a body being in-toxicated by heavy metals.
If you could "DETOXIFY" the body of these metals, you would greatly reduce the number and activity of free radicals, and THAT would mean that the individual cells, not being bombarded as much as they had been, have a chance to come back to life, get rid of the excess calcium inside the cell, and LO! and BEHOLD! the apparent plaque disappeared and blood flow increased.
I have sold this oral chelation formula for 16+ years and I routinely get the result of increased blood flow from its use.
How does this oral chelation formula work, as understood by traditional science?
There are many scientific studies showing that the amino acid L-Cysteine, and the "special" amino acid N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), and the artificial amino acid, EDTA, these three -- are very powerful "chelators."

That means that they have the ability to GRAB, or "bind to metals" and remove them from the body.
This is only a very short description of the process.
But you can see, now, that the word "detoxification" certainly includes a process of ridding the body of metals so as to improve the health of cells in the arteries and thus the flow of blood.
Let's put this concept on hold for a minute.
I have participated in other types of detoxifications. Fasting is often considered a detox process. Aajonus certainly did lots of fasting in his early years. I have fasted for as long as 9 days, water only, and I thought I was going through a detox from that.
I have used colonics and enemas to detoxify my colon, and I've used various herbs and other "stuff" to clean out the body in various ways. I actually started, even before oral chelation, with an herbal formula containing "black cohosh" that was supposed to kill the parasites in my body.
I had, I thought, gone through many different types of "detoxification."
One detox that I was absolutely confident about involved the use of the niacin flush.
ONLY after I heard Aajonus' explanation of how the RAF diet causes detoxification could I see all these "other" forms of "detox" in proper perspective.
Take, for instance, the detoxification of the body of metals by the use of L-Cysteine.
You would see that the body, itself, is pretty much a passive bystander to this process. You put Cysteine into the body, it grabs hold of metals and take them out through the kidneys, in the urine.
Done!
The body did not either hinder nor help the process.
Likewise, depending on how you view fasting, you can see it a deliberate shrinking of the food supply so that various tissues and organs give up their toxins (without looking closely into the mechanics of this.)
Certainly the many various herbal cleanses, or whatever, would be seen as processes where some EXTERNAL agent was introduced into the body to remove some particular toxin, with the body just standing by and not participating much in the process.
That was a long, but necessary explanation of how I viewed the word "detoxification." It was, always, in my experience, some external substance, or procedure, that entered the body and was the cause of toxins being removed.
Many who read this won't begin to have the intensity of my "belief" in this as THE detox process -- some external agent entering the body and causing a removal of toxins.
So, when I experienced "detox" on the RAF diet, I was trying to figure out what was the external agent in raw food that could cause removal of toxins, and how did this happen. In the case of metals, and chelation, I completely understood the process -- the cysteine bound to the metal and the combination package left the body through the urine.
What, for goodness sakes, was the "substance" in raw food that would "remove" the toxins, and what types of toxins were being removed, and how did it work?
When I asked Aajonus this question, I was asking it from a viewpoint of an external agent causing the removal of toxins.
I don't know what Aajonus said the first time, but whatever he said, I didn't get it. So, when I tried to restate what he said, it didn't make sense and he repeated his answer.
That time I got it!
It was a startling revelation to me because he explained that there is an entirely different mechanism for the RAF diet detoxification than in any of the others I have mentioned.
Putting my own recall into Aajonus' mouth, and greatly expanding from the number of words he used, I got from him the following:
The body has its own innate mechanisms for healing the body and cleaning out any type of toxins or disease that may be in the body. There are MANY of these mechanisms. One of them that we readily recognize is the entire immune system. The immune system is entirely "natural" within the body, very complex, and is designed to work automatically to heal the body and get rid of the bad guys.
In the same way, the body has other mechanisms that heal and cleanse the body -- many of these are not understood because they are currently NOT functioning and therefore scientists don't even suspect that they exist.
Why not?
Because many of these other mechanisms are completely turned off by the continuing barrage of toxins in the (cooked) food we eat, and by the complete absence of essential nutrients (such as enzymes) in the food we eat.
So, we eat exactly the types of food that TURN OFF our self-cleansing and self-healing systems in the body.
So, we get sick. They body does NOT heal itself. We throws down drugs and more bad stuff. These self-healing mechanisms get further turned off. Perhaps permanently damaged. There are studies of mice having to go through several generations with proper diet before these mechanisms are turned back on. |

Now, what happens if you start taking live, whole, raw food into the body? What, for instance, might happen if you start feeding the body proteins (such as raw eggs) which are in the perfect ratio needed to replace the proteins (tissue, bone, organs) in the body that are loaded with toxins, and which were made up, originally, from toxin-filled proteins?
What happens?
At some point the body's self-healing process TURNS ON, and the body's own cleansing program starts up.
What does that feel like to YOU?
It feels like what it is -- the body's natural detoxification. "Caused? (??)" by eating raw food? Not quite. The self-cleansing and self-healing mechanisms were being suppressed from operation and all you had to do to get them working again was to remove the suppression (and possibly add some missing nutrients -- missing only because of eating cooked food).
What if this were true?
Wouldn't that be a fantastic mechanism to have in the body?
There might well be a natural mechanism that would rid the body of metals! Why not? When a person is eating cooked food, this natural mechanism might not work, and THEN L-Cysteine might be needed. But, if the person would get onto the RAF Diet, then cysteine would NOT be needed, it would be a detriment!
Remember, I don't know if this is true or not. I was looking for a way that I could understand the Aajonus view of detoxification. I have found that way. That way requires that I accept some data as true -- I haven't done that. What I've done is to accept that data as a working hypothesis -- subject to my further research.
Working with bodies getting only cooked food, and finding an excess of aluminum, a traditional scientist might look for "aluminum chelators" and discover that malic acid has some ability to remove aluminum from the body. THAT is science, but it is science working on a body where the natural aluminum detoxification mechanism may have been turned off!
I have no trouble, from my business viewpoint, of "admitting" that this natural detoxification might be valid, and even showing my customers this page. I can not do otherwise within my perception of ethics.
Wouldn't this be a logical explanation of why and how detoxification takes place on the RAF diet?
This fundamental understanding doesn't being to explain the individual and specific mechanisms that are coming back to life. Who but Aajonus has studied those?
The immune system, we know, is badly suppressed by overuse of antibiotics. But the other mechanisms that are at play when we eat the RAF diet? What are they? I don't know that, yet, but I am now convinced that I understand why the detoxification on the RAF diet might be the only natural form of detoxification -- and why every other type of detoxification may, in fact, just be continuing the suppression of the natural mechanisms.

This, then, explains why Aajonus states that you don't need to take vitamins

Consider that processed vitamins are NOT what the body needs for these natural detoxification mechanisms. But, vitamins that occur naturally in live, raw food? Well that would be a different matter.
Could it be that even raw foods today, grown on the mineral-deficient soil, are devoid of the natural vitamins the body needs? Well, that might be true, and it would allow me to have some sense of morality in making my living by selling (processed) vitamins -- and also taking into account that when a person is on a cooked diet he may well need "cooked" vitamins, or at least that they wouldn't hurt??
I won't even try to answer those questions here, but I leave them unanswered while I continue to sell my vitamins to others, even take them for myself, but move myself more and more, as best I can, onto the RAF diet. I continue to recommend the RAF diet to my customers, including to ask them to read this page.

I am now surmising that it will start in different places for different bodies. That would be a question for another Potluck!
But, my personal detoxification seems to have chosen to take place in an area of previous body weakness -- the psoas muscle. Perhaps I should say that it has taken place in an area where the body was doing its best to detoxify while I was on cooked food. Thus, I had the same pains BEFORE ever getting on the RAF diet. But, the pains intensified on this diet.
Why?
Perhaps because the body was trying to move in that direction in the first place, and the RAF diet just allowed that process to progress more rapidly -- thus more pain.
I don't need to understand that yet, and don't suggest that I've figured it out.
But, I can now marvel at the Aajonus answer -- "The body has many innate detoxification mechanisms which can be allowed to work when they are not suppressed by the constant inflow of toxic foods, and when the vital necessities (enzymes, etc.) are made available for the first time in raw food."
After I had finished writing this I then went to Aajonus' book, We Want To Live, and looked in the index for "detoxification." I know that I read this material earlier, but I was reading it through the fixed idea that I already understood "detoxification" (as explained relative to metals, above).
"Detoxification" is defined on page 197 of the book. When I read it NOW I can see how I read INTO it my own understanding, but that NOW I can read it as Aajonus intended.
