I'm collecting answers to my general question about the pain of detox on the Raw Food Diet -- how to reduce it, or how to accept it. Here are some comments I've received. I am "excerpting" this material from a list to which I belong and this web page is generally only findable by list members. It is not linked to from outside the section.

Here are some thoughts on the cleansing and healing symptoms!
Every RAFer I have met has told me that the first year to year-and-a half on the RAF diet was rough, with frequent bouts of fatigue, pain, soreness, rashes, lung gunk, diarrhea, increased sleep need, and other cleansing and healing symptoms, and my experience has mirrored this, as I jumped head-first 8 months ago into a full-blown 98%-plus RAF diet. I do find that I also have some very good days, quite a few of them, but they are interspersed with some NASTY days. I usually welcome the groady shit, and see it as part of healing and part of LIFE.
Having trained in numerous systems of true healing in the past, I see this as simply part of the course, or part of the territory, and that it too shall pass. I try to accept, allow and release the funny symptoms as quickly as I can, rather than resist them or hate them or fight them (whatever you resist will persist, see www.hell.com ).
HOWEVER, if I feel I DO need a major break (in other words, get to enjoy a new plateau of health and well-being) for a while, with much more energy, clarity, alertness and vitality, along with less sleepiness, and far fewer symptoms and fatigue, then I simply do ALL of the following:
1) back off on the frequency of meals (especially meat and fish) from once every 1 - 1.3 hours to once every 3-4 hours (green juice or tomato blends are OK somewhat more often)
2) back off drastically or 100% on quantity of dairy intake
3) back off slightly (perhaps 10% to 20%) on quantity of meat consumed at each meal
4) increase dosages of antioxidant supplements for a while
5) decrease intake of raw animal fats by about 40% to 50% (skip the lard, cream and butter!)
Lastly, Aajonus sometimes recommends eating small amounts or cooked starches or cooked meat to downward-modulate the rate of the healing and cleansing reactions. I will sometimes also, in addition to the above 4 items, eat a slice of dairy-free pizza (real EV olive oil) from a good pizzeria once per day. This seems to slow down my heavy-duty healing reactions so I can "have a life". A small amount of wine or microbrew beer will also sometimes do the trick as well.

Accelerating Healing Rate:
In a recent conversation with Aajonus, he mentioned that adding carrot juice to the diet (not straight, way too many sugars, but rather some carrots added to green juice) drastically accelerates healing and cleansing, and can make it too uncomfortable for many folks. Paradoxically, it also seems, in both my experience and his, that adding some carrot juice (again, small amounts to avoid overload by the sugars) to the diet can help to drastically relieve some nasty healing/cleansing symptoms, especially those brought on by liver/egg combos or by celery/cucumber/parsley juice, apparently due to some nutrients it offers.
Sunlight, if not excessive, also speeds healing. Some rare RAF souls even engage in sun-gazing to accelerate healing further. One should ideally be trained in order to do this (I have sun-gazed this for 14 years; ask me if you need to know more!)
Decelerating (slowing) Healing Rate:
On the other hand, Aajonus has mentioned that raw beet juice drastically slows healing, and that one can deliberately drink small amounts of it to slow healing and cleansing reactions. I agree, but my gut feeling is that raw beet juice is nonetheless powerful, however, and offers some great nutrients, and that even though it slows healing reactions, it may help that healing to go "deeper" or to be "fuller".
Concluding Thoughts
For both carrot and beet juice, remember that both veggies are root storage veggies and thus have lots of readily available sugars. Thus, one would ideally never want to drink more than a few (3-4) ounces of either one (or both) in a day, in order to avoid simple sugar overload in the body (and resultant formation of free radicals and AGE compounds.)

The things which I discussed in two earlier messages today to accelerate healing (e.g., sunlight, sun gazing, fats, carrot juice, etc.), according to Aajonus, affect the rate of ALL healing throughout the body. This is my experience as well. However, let's face it: if the body is focusing most of its efforts for the next 3 days on a particular problem are (e.g., heart tissue, brain tissue, uro-genital tract tissue, depending upon the person and their most pressing health problem) then we should expect to see the greatest EFFECTS of this acceleration in those tissues over the short term.
I do want to stress that SOME of these accelerators of healing/cleansing actually seem to DECREASE many adverse symptoms of healing/cleansing, to wit: carrot juice (small amounts) and sunlight, as I may have mentioned earlier today. However, in my experience other accelerators of healing such as raw animal fats, decayed raw animal fats and raw dairy, seem, in my body at least, to intensify the groady symptoms as well as the healing rate.
I personally find that taking ample amounts of antioxidants seems to speed healing a bit and to moderately to drastically (depends upon the exact thing being cleansed or repaired) decrease the painful symptoms (except for the fatigue and increased sleep needs).

The clay is really phenomenal. Aajonus has shared a lot about the clay at the potlucks. At one potluck he told the story of a man who ate a huge amount of poison ( I cant remember which kind though ) ( I want to say arsenic or something like that ) , and he did it to win a contest for the Guinness Book of world records. And so he did this, ate pounds of poison and should have died several times over, yet he lived and didn't get sick or anything. He kept his secret of how he survived eating this poison until nearing the last years of his life, he decided to share with people that what he had done, was he had eaten a lot of bentonite clay before hand.
Between March 1991 and November 1999, I was able to do forty 7 day tissue cleanse programs. one of these in 1993 lasted for 30 days and about 6 of the cleanses I did in the last three years of cleansing, I did for ten days or 2 weeks. During each day I took ten tablespoons of bentonite clay, and I did two colemas a day as well. Even though pounds of toxins were being removed, after my eighth cleanse I no longer lost weight during the week. During the first eight cleanses I did lose weight and regained to my normal weight after a week or two. Still each time I cleansed pounds of toxic stuff came out of me. Some of the long thick mucous linings that came out were over four feet long and stayed as one piece and were all rubbery. Over the years, and during the different cleanses, it was possible to recognize some of the very old foods that were coming out that I had not eaten for years. Also you could tell that the clay was removing toxins, since the mucous linings that were released had a toxic odor.
If you have not had a personal experience with this type of cleansing, and have only done enemas or colonics, but never after doing the clay and fasting on minimal nutrients with the clay as a cleansing drink to detox the internal gut, then I believe that you do have toxins in your tissues that need to be pulled out somehow. Now I have only been 100% RAF for fourteen months now. I heard that James from our coop did not get hit with his first major cleansing until after 18 months on all RAF.
Maybe my day will come soon. Yet so far, I have not suffered major detox symptoms, other than smelling novocaine in my morning urine after a five day head congestion at five months on the RAF. Anyway, it is from my experience with detoxing over the last ten years, that I know that the clay really works and that I have detoxed a lot of crap out of my body.
I have used the following analogy to explain this many times, and that is that Let us say that you have a house full of things! ( as we all do! ) and you want to move everything into a moving van outside of your house.
Or another analogy could be that the Salvation Army shows up with their truck and you decide you want to give them all of the things that you no longer need or want. You could take one item at a time and walk to the truck and put it in the truck and then walk back into your house and take another item, ( let's say a spoon ) and then you take the spoon and walk outside and put it in the truck and then you walk back inside again and this time you take a book and again you walk back outside again and put the book in the truck and now you walk back in your house and this time you take a Kleenex and you walk back out of the house and put the Kleenex in the truck. Etc..
As you can well imagine, it will take a very long time to empty your house of unwanted items and fill the truck that will take it all away.
Thus if you were to pack what you dont want into boxes and have men who work for the donation truck come in your house and remove the boxes and put them in the truck for you, it will be a much faster process of accomplishing the same thing, which was to take what you no longer wanted in your house and give it away to get it out of your house.
Using the bentonite clay is like having all of the unwanted stuff packed up and moved out quickly and easily.
If you have not had the experience that I have had then you may or may not want to experience it yourself. Yet until you do experiment, you will not know if what I am saying really works. Thus if you do not know from your own experience if the Bentonite clay will remove pounds of toxins and poisons out of your body, then you can not put down what I have shared about this quality of Bentonite clay to adsorb poisons and toxins and to neutralize acids and toxins to make them inert so that they do not create a stirring up of poisons and toxins in the body as the toxins are removed.
When you use the new bacteria from raw food to clean up the toxins, it can be like having to take one little bit of something out of the body one step at a time. This is like stirring up the muck at the bottom of a fish tank when it needs cleaning. As you vacuum the fish poop out of the bottom of the tank, the water gets all murky and filled with residue pieces of the fish poop. Just like when you start to cleanse your body with the raw food, you stir up some toxins at times and this makes the blood get all toxic and you suffer detox symptoms. Anytime I have had detox symptoms I have taken the Aajonus approved clay and it really helped me to feel better quickly.
Aajonus gave some specific ways to take the clay at the last potluck. He said to use regular water to take it with and not the mineral water. ( since mineral water has oxygenation, it will destroy some of the bacteria in the clay ) Also he said to soak the powdered clay in a cup of water for three days before taking it to allow it time to gain bacteria growth. Besides the helpful bacteria, the Bentonite clay is high in negative ions. ( I wrote about this quality in previous posts ) Thus the clay also has the ability to adsorb the poisons or positive ions, and make these poisons inert so they are no longer harmful. Just like the man who ate all of the poison for the Guinness Book of world records, and lived because he had previously ingested the bentonite clay. This story is told by Aajonus in the potluck tape that was just before the last recent potluck.
