The Board has been notified that the Department of Health Services discovered several markets selling raw milk in violation of current County codes. Los Angeles County codes only permit the sale of certified raw milk.
The milk being sold at these stores met the State code; however, it was not certified in Los Angeles County. State code permits two other categories of raw milk, Grade A and Guaranteed, which are produced under State inspection only, but allows each County to determine whether these types of raw milk may be sold.
My office has been told that there is only one certified raw milk producer in Los Angeles County and that single producer has not produced certified raw milk in at least a year.
In addition, the body that certifies raw milk in Los Angeles County is the Medical Milk Commission. The Milk Commission has suspended its meeting because no producer has come forward with plans to resume production in the near future. It is unfair to penalize consumers of raw milk by eliminating their ability to purchase this product.
I, THEREFORE, MOVE that the Director of Health Services and County Counsel report back in 30 days with changes to the Los Angeles County Ordinance which will align the County code with the State code permitting two other categories of raw milk, Grade A and Guaranteed.
