Approximately 70 people showed for the
demonstration and vote by LA County Board of Supervisors yesterday.
Our hard work came to fruition about high Noon. Before the meeting we were told that most of the Supervisors would vote against allowing state-approved raw milk without LA County certification.
We had been told the that our toughest opponent was Zev Yaroslavsky, even though I had made it very clear, with supporting documents that LA County would face a lawsuit against it and its Milk Commissioners for their public statements to ban and implement the ban on raw milk.
During the testimony yesterday, Zev asked the Dept of Health Services' officials: Why don't we have raw milk in this county? What happened since 1991 to cause us to lose it? Did we do something wrong?
The health official was not well-informed and stammered without directly answering the questions.
Zev then asked, pointedly: What do we know that most of the other counties in California don't know about raw milk? Why do they think it is safe and we don't?
Again the official stammered and did not address the answer pointedly or succinctly.
There was a 10-minute discussion about bacteria. A proponent and drinker of raw milk Attorney Raymond Novell, an expert on bacteria (those are the cases he tries), was called to speak and he refuted everything that the health official stated about raw milk and bacteria.
One of the health deputies for one of the supervisors approached me at that point and said, "If you get a majority "Yes" vote now, do you still want to be heard?" I told her, if we could get this passed without speaking let's do it.
As discussions continued, she polled each Supervisor, then whispered to County Mayor Knabe. The Supervisors were outwardly polled for their votes and all said "Aye" except Molina. (Molina stood talking to someone without listening most of the discussion. When she was polled for her vote, she had to be addressed three times to get her attention.) The motion was passed and soon we will have state-approved raw milk available in health food stores in Los Angeles County! We applauded and hugged.
Attorney Novell approached me afterward and thanked us for our work. He said that all of the calls we made forced Yaroslavsky to personally review our documentation. He did his homework and was informed by the time of Board-meeting yesterday, as you can tell by his questions above.
Thank you, all of you, for calling the Supervisors. Together we made this David-and-Goliath process and final event successful. I love you!!!
