A devastating blow has been dealt to the cancer establishment's "war on cancer" by the release this month of Questioning Chemotherapy by the legendary cancer researcher Ralph W Moss PhD.
The astounding conclusion one must reach after reading Moss's remarkable new book is that chemotherapy, one of the most widely used approaches in the treatment of cancer, is simply ineffective in the vast majority of human cancers.
What may be even more frightening is that the research Moss has uncovered not only demonstrates that chemotherapy is all too often ineffective, but it is often extraordinarily dangerous both short and long term.
This important new book, which exposes the nearly abject failure of chemotherapy, has come at the worst possible time for the beleaguered cancer establishment that was reeling from the resignation of Dr Samuel Broder, the director of National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Dr Bruce Chabner NCI's director of cancer treatment.
Increasingly we see our friends and family members dying of cancer after devastating illness often unaffected by treatments feared more than the disease itself. Though failure is always hard to admit., after decades with little success, it may be time to declare that chemotherapy is nothing more than a dull weapon-;almost useless in the war on cancer.
Betsy Lehman, an award winning health columnist for the Boston Globe died on December 3, 1994. She died of chemotherapy.
The 39-year-old mother of two had breast cancer and sought what she considered was the best treatment at one of the finest medical facilities in the world -;the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Instead of a cure, Lehman got a lethal dose of chemotherapy which was overlooked by at least a dozen physicians, nurses and pharmacists for over four days.
The cause of death wasn't discovered until February 13, after clerks went through her treatment records. Nearly at the end of her 3 months of treatment, the record indicated that Lehman died of heart failure after she was given four times the maximum safe dosage of a highly toxic drug during her chemotherapy treatment.
"She was dealing with horrendous symptoms. The whole lining of her gut from one end to the other was shedding. She was vomiting sheets of tissue. They said it was the worst they had ever seen. But the doctors said this was all normal," according to Lehman's husband, Robert Distal, a scientist at Dana-Farber.
Critics have suggested this death may not be an isolated incident. Dr O Michael Colvin, director of the Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center asked, "If this can happen at a place like Dana-Farber...what is happening in other places?"
Just two days before Lehman's death, a 52-year-old woman was the victim of the same mistake at Dana-Farber and was rushed into intensive care with serious heart damage and remains hospitalized.
Dr David Livingston, Dana-Farber physician-in-chief stated, "We accept absolutely full responsibility for these tragedies." The hospital is negotiating a settlement with Lehman's family.
The Lehman case was just one of a series of blatant medical errors that have caused fatalities in patients.
The most recent is the case of a Des Plaines, Illinois man, Vincent Gargano who was seeking therapy for his cancer and instead got an overdose of chemotherapy and died at the University of Chicago on May 26th after receiving four times the prescribed dosage of chemotherapy for testicular cancer.
Howard Shaffner, Attorney for Gargano's wife, Therese, indicated he would file a wrongful-death suit and will challenge the new Illinois state law which limits damages for pain and suffering to $500,000.
Gargano, a mail sorter for the US Postal Service, was being treated for testicular cancer. Shaffner said doctors told the family, "You couldn't ask for a more treatable cancer." "Gargano had an 80% chance of recovery, instead he died horribly," the attorney said.
Gargano's heart stopped after he was placed on dialysis when his kidneys failed. Because his immune system was affected he developed infections "all over his body," Shaffner said. His body reportedly twitched uncontrollably because of severe calcium depletion and he was placed on a respirator after developing pneumonia. Gargano's children are 10, 13, and 14 years old.
Dr Stanislaw Burzynski, the controversial Houston based cancer researcher, has long contended that cancer is a disease of information processing and that the human body possesses a Biochemical Defense System consisting of Antineoplastons which protect against abnormal cell growth.
When proper levels of these substances exist in the human body, he contends, cells die normally in a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
When insufficient levels of these substances exist, cancer cells escape the fate of normal cells, and instead of dying, multiply endlessly.
Modern medicine is now beginning to independently confirm what Burzynski has theorized for nearly two decades.
Scientific research was presented to the 86th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in March 1995 which demonstrates that Dr Burzynski's antineoplastons decrease the activity of the p53 oncogene and increase the the activity of the VHL tumor suppressor genes.
Burzynski contends that there are two events necessary to develop cancer: 1) increase of the activity of oncogenes, and 2) decrease of the activity of tumor suppressor genes.
According to Burzynski, there is no other treatment available which can address both of these two most important mechanisms of cancer.
Further important research presented to the AACR meeting indicate that in cancer of the breast, prostate and in glioblastoma (brain cancer), phenylacetate, one of the components of antineoplastons, also increases the tumors sensitivity to radiation and decreases resistance to chemotherapy.
Since the early 1980's Burzynski and his team have studied the methylation of DNA. Since independent research indicates that excessive methylation causes inactivation of the genes, he postulated that by decreasing methylation it is possible to 'awaken' the gene," Burzynski told Options. "The genes are like 'genies' imprisoned in bottles, Burzynski said, when you open the bottle the genie can grant you at least three wishes.
Wish #1 -;is to control cancer by increasing suppressor genes such as NF-1, p53, and VHL.
Wish #2 -;deals with the treatment of hereditary disease where the underlying mechanism is not mutation, but genomic imprinting. Genomic imprinting consists of inactivation of the gene through methylation. The proof is in the successful treatment of neurofibromatosis.
Wish #3 -;is the treatment of sickle cell anemia and thalassemia by unblocking biosynthesis of this type of hemoglobin in the adult organism.
Burzynski, confident mainstream scientific would never publish his theory, applied and was granted US Patent #5,391,575 for the treatment of neurofibromatosis based on the unblocking of NF-1 gene through reduction of methylation.
Burzynski, in a paper entitled Potential of Antineoplastons in Diseases of Old Age, writes of cancer and the elderly, "Standard chemotherapy and radiation therapy offer little hope for the elderly, and make them vulnerable for infections...it can be clearly observed that [non-toxic] antineoplastons induce abnormal cells to undergo terminal differentiation and die. Dying cells are gradually eliminated and replaced by normal cells, leading to healing of the diseased organ. Once all abnormal cells are eliminated, the disease should be cured.
As the sun set on the longest day of the year, in Texas, Dr Burzynski was once again preparing to defend his dream and the lives of the patients who depend upon it.
The FDA and the US attorney had rounded up a posse and were gunning for Burzynski once again.
On June 21, 1995, four of Burzynski's employees: Gabriella Howard, Cheryl Owens, Eva Powell, and Barbara Tomaszewski were subpoenaed to appear before the Texas Grand Jury.
Barbara Tomaszewski was requested to bring any and all medical records of 22 patients complete with all x-rays, MRIs, and CT scan films of the patients.
"What was strange and unusual about this latest request," Burzynski told Options, "is that the medical records of some of the very same patients were taken by the FDA when they raided my clinic in 1985." In addition, the records of 7 of the patients were presented to the experts from NCI during their site visit on October 1991 and later submitted to NCI on September 10, 1992. The records of 6 patients from this group were submitted in quadruplicate to FDA on two sperate occasions.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI), plagued by problems of its own, recently joined the fray after Burzynski charged researchers with misconduct in the NCI sponsored trials of antineoplastons.
Burzynski charged that the researchers from Sloan Kettering had violated the original FDA approved protocol in every single patient's case, then unilaterally changed the agreed upon protocol. Burzynski wrote NCI, "The acceptance of very advanced brain tumor patients to the current protocol would be highly unethical because there is no realistic chance they will have a meaningful response. Moreover, the informed consent form as currently written falsely implies that the discovery of antineoplastons believes such advanced patients may benefit substantially from the current protocol."
Critics charge that various arms of the federal government including the IRS, FDA, NCI, USPS and the US Attorney's Office appear to be cooperating openly in an attempt to stop Burzynski rather than to allow fair and impartial clinical trials to proceed.
"This is just terrible," said Berkley Bedell, an Advisory Board Member of the Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM) in the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Bedell, the former member of the US Congress from the state of Iowa said, "it appears that these federal agents are attempting to interfere with the mandate of the Congress to scientifically investigate and validate Burzynski's therapy through OAM."
Ralph W Moss, also an advisor to OAM, wrote the following in a letter to NIH Director, Dr Harold Varmus and Secretary of Health, Dr Phillip Lee: "The OAM was formed to bring an end to an unfortunate era in which opinions on alternative methods were sharply polarized, and in which it was difficult to obtain fair and, scientific evaluations of such treatments. We would like to work with you and your office to ensure such a fair and thorough evaluation of antineoplastons." The letter was signed by 15 of the 18 member Board of OAM.
"It may now be virtually impossible to get a fair evaluation of antineoplastons," says Frank Wiewel, a long time critic of the cancer establishment. "You now have FDA, NCI, USPS and the US Attorney's Office marching lock-step against Burzynski in the Great Medical Monopoly Wars circa 1995."
Wiewel, also an advisor to OAM, said "I am deeply concerned over the senseless loss of human lives in this tragic war. This year over 600,000 Americans will die of cancer. It is a travesty. We desperately need to fairly investigate these promising alternatives."
Burzynski told Options, "I have never heard of such a ridiculous action in any civilized country. It is clear that the intention behind this action is to disturb the treatment of patients who clearly respond and whose lives depend on our treatment."
The request to give x-rays, MRIs and CT films was quite unusual. Approximately 800 films were involved. We need these films because some of these patients are still on active treatment," Burzynski said. Burzynski estimates the cost to copy the films alone would be over $10,000.
But in a surprise move, agents from the FDA and the USPS confiscated the actual films without allowing Burzynski to make copies.
Burzynski said, "Our employees have been harassed by the Assistant US attorneys, even to the dismay of the members of the Grand Jury."
Burzynski indicated that as terrible as things seem, the story still isn't over. There will be another round of investigations and document producing in July. In spite of a two year IRS audit which failed to produce any wrong-doing on Burzynski's part, the Assistant US Attorneys are going to conduct the entire investigation all over again. They have already subpoenaed his CPA and Burzynski's complete financial records.
Burzynski said, "I am very proud to be an American citizen but I am ashamed of what my country is doing to these poor innocent cancer patients."
Kyle Slavik was a normal 11-year old who dreamed of being a fighter pilot and flying the F-18.
His dream was temporarily put on hold hold one Saturday morning in February of 1993 when he woke up with severe pains in his hip and groin. Within 24 hours Kyle couldn't walk.
He was admitted to the hospital by his family physician for routine tests and antibiotics. His friends came to wish him well and brought cards and gifts, while the doctors did batteries of tests.
Finally on February 9, 1993 came the diagnosis-;neuroblastoma stage 4.
According to Bill Slavik, Kyle's father, "We were all totally ignorant of what was ahead of us."
The prognosis was poor. Stage 4 Neuroblastoma had only a 10 percent 1-year survival without treatment and only a 30 percent survival even with aggressive chemotherapy and Bone Marrow Transplant.
With trust in their doctors, the family took Kyle to the prestigeous St Judes Hospital for whole body radiation and Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant (ABMT).
Bill Slavik told a story familiar to the families of many newly diagnosed cancer patients, "We trusted these doctors, led by one of the most respected oncologists in the country. Surely with their wealth of knowledge and experience we were doing the right thing and Kyle would be cured."
Slavik described the next year as, "Going to Hell and back again." After one year of chemotherapy using different drugs and transfusions for neutropenia, and after weeks of solitary isolation, there was no change in Kyle's tumor.
It was chemo-resistant, there is nothing more we can do the oncologists told the family-;enjoy him while you can. To Kyle and his family this was unacceptable.
"From a friend of a friend," Slavik said, "we found out about a non-profit organization called People Against Cancer. The volunteers there gave us more hope and encouragement over the telephone than any one of Kyle's doctors on their best day. They made us aware of options we never knew existed."
In the ensuing months Kyle took oxygen therapy, chelation therapy and improved his diet and nutrition with nutritional supplements. They then contacted John Prudden MD, a Harvard graduate and former professor of medicine at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Prudden prescribed Bovine Cartilage (VitaCart) at 9 grams per day as a non-toxic means of killing tumor cells.
Additionally, Kyle and his family contacted Dr Jack Taylor at the Taylor Wellness Center for his Metabolic Assessment Program, a program consisting of diet, supplements and detoxification organized specifically to Kyle's body chemistry.
"During the same period," Bill Slavik remembers, "Father Tom Blondin came into our lives from 'out of nowhere' to celebrate mass and prayer sessions. We soon found many people we didn't even know were praying for Kyle. There is no doubt in our minds about the healing power and strength we received from these prayers." Bill Slavik told PAC volunteer, Charlotte Christie, "Thank you for giving my son back to us."
"Now one year later we have totally reversed Kyle's prognosis," his father said. "The tumors are gone and we continue to pray for the knowledge and resources to reverse the horrendous damage we allowed the doctors to inflict on Kyle's body."
In a letter to Options, Slavik went on to say, "Throughout all our travels, reading and research, through the struggles to change our diet, nutrition and lifestyle, we have realized that one person standing on their own could never win the battle against cancer. We were drafted into this war along with Kyle like the millions of others before us."
Kyle once again dreams of being a fighter pilot and flying the F-18.
Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength,
whose hearts turn away from the Lord.
They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes.
They shall live in parched places of the wilderness, in uninhabited salt land.
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.
They shall be like a tree planted by water sending out its roots by the stream.
This tree shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green.
In the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.

Dear Friends,
On Wednesday June 21, 1995, Federal Agents from the FDA and the US Postal Service raided the Burzynski Clinic in Houston again. They seized over 800 x-rays and CT scans necessary for the treatment of patients and gave Burzynski no opportunity to make copies. The patient's lives are now in danger.
This raid was a new and frightening chapter in the unrelenting attack on Dr Burzynski by the medical establishment which has gone on for over a decade. Here is a chronology:
* In March 1983, the FDA filed a lawsuit against Burzynski alleging interstate shipment of his medicines. The US District Court Judge McDonald ruled against FDA and allowed Burzynski to treat patients within Texas but not to ship the medicine interstate.
* On July 17, 1985, Burzynski's Clinic was raided by FDA agents who confiscated all of the confidential patient records. Burzynski was not allowed to copy the records so he could properly treat the patients.
* In 1986, a US Attorney, Henry Oncken, launched a grand jury investigation into Burzynski's Clinic. Oncken, the US Attorney was forced to resign.
* Later in 1986, Burzynski patients sued Aetna Insurance for failing to pay claims. Aetna then filed a racketeering (RICO) lawsuit against Burzynski. Burzynski countersued with a RICO action against Aetna. The Aetna suit against Burzynski was dropped.
* In 1988, the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners (TSBME) filed suit to take Burzynski's medical license. In 1993, a Texas judge ruled for Burzynski-;the treatment was legal. In 1994, TSBME ignored the judge, suspended his license and put Burzynski on probation for 10 years. Burzynski appealed.
* On February 3, 1995 ruled in favor of Burzynski on Appeal saying the TSBME's action was "arbitrary, capricious and characterized by abuse of discretion." TSBME appealed.
* On March 24, 1995 FDA and USPS Officials raided Burzynski's Clinic (See Options April 95, Page 7).
* On June 21, 1995 FDA and USPS Agents again raided Burzynski's Clinic and seized over 800 x-ray films and CT scans leaving Burzynski unable to treat his patients.
This is an outrage! In all these actions against Burzynski, no one has even suggested that Burzynski has harmed a single patient. The fact that Burzynski has cured terminal cancer patients who failed to respond to conventional therapy doesn't seem to matter to them.
We ask each and every one of you to call and write and fax your US Senator and Congressperson. Ask them to call Senator Tom Harkin and request a Hearing. Senator, US Senate, Washington, DC 20515, Senate Phone: 202-224-3121. Congressperson, US House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515, House Phone: 202-225-3121. Please send a copy of your letter to: People Against Cancer, Otho, IA 50569. We have enclosed a sample letter on the next page. Sign and send it-;or better yet, write your own.

Dear Senator,
We are outraged by the FDA and USPS raid on Dr Stanislaw Burzynski's Clinic in Houston Texas on June 21, 1995. People with terminal cancer not responsive to conventional therapy need access to Burzynski's non-toxic therapy. American citizens should not be harrased FDA agents. The FDA should protect and serve American citizens.
Dr Burzynski has complied with all FDA regulations and is successfully treating patients with terminal cancers which have not responded to conventional therapy. He has had success with brain cancers such as glioblastoma multiforme and astrocytoma which are incurable conventionally. He has had success with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, the cancer that killed Jacqueline Onassis, after chemotherapy and even bone marrow transplants have failed. He has applied for and received permission from FDA to use his medicine, Antineoplastons, under Investigational New Drug Permits. Further, Dr Burzynski and his employees are complying all FDA regulations. But the harassment of Dr Burzynski and his patients by the FDA in Houston continues.
Physicians take an oath, Above All, Do No Harm! There is no evidence that any of his patients have been harmed by his therapy. But Dr Burzynski's patients may indeed be harmed by the stress and fear of recent FDA actions. Many have no other options, as the conventional therapy for these cancers has been toxic, dangerous and ineffective.
Patients with life threatening illness need access to new medical treatments. Physicians need the freedom to treat them. How else will medical science progress? As you know, it now takes decades for new drug approval in America. Thousands will die waiting. It now costs hundreds of millions of dollars for new drug approval. So safe, effective alternatives, like Burzynski's Antineoplastons must be available.
You can stop the FDA attack on Burzynski's cancer patients.
Out of human decency and compassion, please call and write Senator Tom Harkin and ask him to hold Senate Hearings on the Burzynski affair. And put an end to FDA harassment. Don't let these patients die without hope. Please copy me in your correspondence on my behalf.
Sincerely,
An all-natural nutritional supplement called pycnogenol (pronouncedpick-NAH-gen-ol) may be a very important new weapon in the "war on disease." Clinical studies have shown it to be fifty times more powerful than vitamin E and twenty times more powerful than vitamin C at neutralizing free radicals.
As a potent antioxidant, pycnogenol scavenges the free radicals that wreak havoc on the body's cells. Simply put, free radicals are molecules with an unpaired electron. Scientists now believe that free radicals are the fundamental cause of aging and chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer.
The free radical theory of aging was first put forward in a ground breaking paper by Denham Harman MD, PhD, at Berkley over 40 years ago entitled, Aging: A Theory Based on Free Radical and Radiation Chemistry published by University of California at Berkeley in 1955.
In the paper Harman wrote, "The universality of this phenomenon (aging) suggests that the reactions, which cause it, are basically the same in all living things. Viewing this process, which in essence is cellular degeneration...It seems possible that one factor in aging may be related to deleterious side attacks of free radicals on cell constituents."
Some conventional doctors have had trouble with the free radical theory of aging because of the serious economic implications. If you agree with the theory, then one has to then buy into the antioxidant vitamin theory as well. Because vitamins C and E, and beta carotene, selenium, Co-enzyme Q10 and pycnogenol are the most powerful means of controlling free radicals.
The generation of free radicals is a normal part of living. They are generated as a byproduct of respiration which allows the body to use oxygen in the oxygen reduction or redox cycle. Additionally, white blood cells use free radicals to destroy bacteria and cells infected with viruses. But in the absence of sufficient quantities of antioxidants free radicals also damage the DNA and contribute to the aging process and cancer.
Compounding the problem are the free radicals generated by many environmental factors such as radiation, cigarette smoke, air pollution, polyunsaturated fatty acids and many food additives.
Iatrogenisis, or doctor induced illness, is also a major factor in the promotion of free radicals. Both chemotherapy and radiation, used in the treatment of cancer are notorious promoters of free radical pathology.
Scientists in Europe have dubbed pycnogenol "the youth nutrient," and Jacques Masquelier, the discoverer of pycnogenol, believes that it acts in special synergy with other antioxidants such as vitamin C.
Dr Harmon, now professor emeritus at the University of Nebraska says, "Antioxidants can bolster the body's defenses, slow down aging...and may extend the human life span."
He added, "We will probably see an increase in life span with all the people who are now taking antioxidant supplements. I hope to be around a few more years to see it."

A new class of natural and non-toxic substances called isoflavones, found in the soybean have been found to protect against cancer.
Isoflavones such as diadzein, equol and genistein are in the class of phytochemicals (plant based chemicals) which are now under intense study for their anti-cancer activity in the US and throughout the world.
Researchers in Germany found high levels of genistine, the most potent of the isoflavones, stopped the growth of endothelial cells, the primary cells that form new blood vessel growth to tumors.
Researchers have found that eating a diet high in soy reduces the risk of melanoma and cancers of the breast, prostate, and colon.
At the Designer Foods III symposium at Georgetown University over 40 researchers presented scientific evidence on the disease fighting properties of such diverse dietary substances as garlic, licorice and soybeans. Herbert Pierson, PhD, said, These phytochemicals... could be taken in supplement form to help prevent or fight disease."
A new soy beverage product called Haelan 851, high in genistine, is now available from: Metabolic Health Products, 800-551-2577.
The sudden death of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis last month shocked the world.
The former first lady died after intensive chemo-therapy for her non-hodgkins lymphoma. And her death has prompted new questions about the growing use of chemotherapy.
Researchers are beginning to raise serious questions about the new high dose combination chemotherapy protocols which produce profoundly dangerous side effects and fail to prolong life in clinical studies.
Mounting research demonstrates that for the vast majority of human cancers chemotherapy is dangerous and unproven.
Dr Hans Neiper of Germany reportedly declared, "Doctors from all over the world are saying what is obviously true-;the chemotherapy killed her, not the cancer."
