by Claudia Jemal

I have a box that’s filled with toys
unlike the ones that other boys
will pull out on a rainy day.

I wonder if you want to play with me
because now if you do
I’ll share all of my toys with you.

My toybox has some special things
like nouns and verbs that have a ring.
They’ve lasted me these many years.
I use them to uplift my peers.
For endless hours they fascinate.
I have got something really great.

My starter kit had Goo and Gaa
Which then progressed to Pa and Ma
and nursery rhymes that never pall.
I have the cutest toy of all.

When I was young I had a ball
It lost it’s bounce and was too small.
And then toy guns to make you fall
Words are the funnest toys of all.

I never cared for finger-paints,
they were too messy, not for saints
like me who took another call.
I have the truest toy of all.

Those boring toys like Barbie dolls
that can be found in all the malls
soon lose their power to enthrall
I have the coolest toy of all.

My parakeet, he bit the dust
My bicycle, it went to rust
but adjectives outlast them all
I have the greatest toy of all

I play with words, I make some puns
I’ve got some really funny ones.
Of bantering I do not tire
These words continue to inspire.
When my allowance I had spent
I still could be grandiloquent.

This box is filled up to the brim.
Words satisfy my every whim.
I pick one out, I watch it shine
I put it back. It’s not the time
Each word, a treasure to enjoy
I get such pleasure from each toy.

I’m like a kid on Christmas eve,
I do not sleep. These words, they seep
into my dreams with wakeup calls.
I have the loudest toys of all.

There’s articles and verbs galore
but I don’t buy them at the store.
I never go out to a mall
I shop at home, I have a ball
My wordbook is a catalog.
I never need to brave the smog.
I have no fear of getting lost.
I always can afford the cost.
And adverbs, I can get for free
These words are just the thing for me!

Some people play with fancy cars
and others have a thing for bars
Some women like a dress that twinkles.
Words pack up without a wrinkle.
Diamonds sometimes lose their shine
Cause they are not a toy like mine!

This box is filled with special words
that you may have already heard.
I know that I will not outgrow it.
Now that I have become a poet.
And since I’ve shown you my collection
that I handle with affection,
maybe you will want to peek
into my toybox filled with Greek.
