C an you go for more than a day without eating sugar in some form?
 Do you drink soft drinks or milkshakes, eat Danish pastry, 
fruit yogurt (a 6 oz. carton has 7 teaspoons of sugar or honey), 
donuts, bagels, cakes, cookies, most bran muffins or many other
 sugary items. Can you go without any other foods that contain 
words ending in "ose" such as sucrose and fructose, or contain
 corn syrup, corn sweetener, honey, barley malt, maple syrup,
 sugar cane solids, or rice syrup? Do you pig out on a carton of ice
 cream or a bag of cookies? If you find that sugar is part of your
 diet every day, you may have a problem.

The average person eats 153 pounds of sugar a year. That is equivalent
 to over 1/2 cup of sugar a day. The teenage boy eats twice that much.
 So you say, "Who cares?" What is wrong with sugar?

Scientific evidence in many medical journals shows that sugar can ruin
 your health. Do you have any of the following symptoms? Do you fall
 asleep after meals, have allergies, gas, bloating, extended stomach after
 meals, joint pains, headaches, chronic fatigue, constipation, diarrhea,
 over weight, skin problems, high blood pressure or other symptoms?
 These all can be signs of a sugar problem.

We have evolved from early man having mechanisms to digest foods.
 We do not have the digestive mechanisms to digest the glut of sugar
 that we are eating on a daily basis.

Recently, information has emerged as to what happens to the minerals
 in the body when sugar and other abusive foods are eaten. For
 example, every time we eat just as little as two teaspoons of sugar, 
our blood chemistry can change, and we can throw ourselves out 
of homeostasis, the wonderful electrochemical balance needed for 
health and life itself.

Doctors and clinicians do not usually test the total blood chemistry 
of a person before and after ingesting sugar, but if they did, they would 
find that the minerals increase or decrease, and change relationship 
with each other. In the usual case the calcium increases and the 
phosphorus decreases (the ratio of calcium to phosphorous increases 
too much) and there is toxic calcium in the body because minerals 
only work in relation to each other. A mineral can become toxic to 
the body when there is an excess of that mineral in the body. Toxic 
calcium can cause plaque on the teeth, kidney stones, arthritis, 
cataracts, bone spurs, and hardening of the arteries. These are effects 
of an increase in a particular mineral ratio.

When minerals decrease, they can be reduced to such an extent that 
our enzymes are unable to function well, as each enzyme is dependent 
upon a mineral to function. As a result we do not digest our food 
completely, and some of this undigested food can get directly into 
the blood stream and is treated as a foreign substance. This by-product 
of incomplete digestion, causes the immune system to come into action.

Food Allergy

Actually, this is one form of food allergy. The immune system must 
respond to this undigested or partially digested food in the blood 
stream. For some of us, this undigested food can cause an 
inflammatory response with sneezes and wheezes. For others 
it might cause headaches, anger, arthritis, fatigue, multiple 
sclerosis, psoriasis or other problems. On top of all this, too 
much sugar can overwork and exhaust our white cells and 
weaken our immune system. The white blood cells need protein 
to function, and they are not receiving the correct protein 
combinations since protein is not being digested and 
assimilated properly.

The bottom line is that sugar upsets the body chemistry and 
suppresses the immune system. Once the immune system 
becomes suppressed, the door is opened to infectious and 
degenerative diseases. The stronger the immune system, the 
easier it is for the body to fight infectious and degenerative diseases.

Sugar is implicated in the following diseases and many more: 
allergies, arthritis, diabetes, hypoglycemia, osteoporosis, 
gallstones, kidney stones, headaches, yeast infections, and cataracts.

So if you have any of the symptoms or diseases mentioned, 
remove all forms of sugar from your diet for two weeks. 
I think that you will be pleasantly surprised. Not only will 
some of those symptoms disappear but you will be 
strengthening your immune system, allowing it to do the job 
it was meant to - defend you against foreign invaders.

There's the old saying that sugar is poison. After reading Lick the Sugar Habit, you'll be convinced of that. Americans each consume more than 150 pounds of sugar and related sweeteners each year. It's pretty easy for it to add up when you consider that there are 17 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of Coke. Author Nancy Appleton delineates how this sugar overconsumption wreaks havoc with our immune and endocrine systems, leading to chronic conditions including arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma, and hypoglycemia, along with the usual suspects such as cavities and periodontal disease. Appleton admits that she herself used to be a sugar addict, preferring to take her sweets in the form of chocolate, and consequently suffered from numerous allergies, plus bronchitis, pneumonia, and even a chest tumor that turned out to be a huge calcium deposit that resulted from her body's inability to process the pounds of sugar she consumed.

The book starts with thorough quizzes to determine if you really are a "sugarholic" and to test for sugar-related food allergies. I read this book about 1 year ago, and since then I have made major changes in my diet, following many of the suggestions in the book. It is amazing what a difference sugar makes in your health and energy level. I used to have at least 2 and sometimes 7 hypoglycemic attacks a week. I now haven't had one in over 10 months! If you have a sugar addiction, hypoglycemia, or diabetes I suggest this book highly!!! Even if you just want to improve your immune system and not get sick as much, this book is for you. I have been striving for better health since I was 6 months pregnant, and this was one of a few integral books in my success. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This book is more than just about sugar and mineral imbalance. So what if she is not a doctor? A PhD is useless? You don't have to study medicine to read reports in medical journals about the effects of refined sugar on your health. One reviewer complains about the subject of pollution not being in her book. Why? The book is about sugar, not pollution.

First of all, Thank you Nancy Appleton for changing my life forever with this one book.... Now that I know the Truth, I have changed my ways to a healthier and happy lifestyle. I have gone back to college and am holding down a professional job... I am 24 years old and about 6 months ago I picked up this book. I used to be a drug addict, alcoholic, and sugarholic(first from childhood) I never knew what it meant to be truly healthy until I cut down sugar consumption... I have very few friends now---You wanna know why? Because most everybody you meet in this country is a sugar addict. You don't believe me? Go anywhere/anytown USA and just watch people's eating habits and count how many bars there are.. What a sad state of affair we live in.. We don't need no devil to destroy us(figuratively speaking) we just need the <damn> sugar. Most everything people do revolves around this sad drug. When will we ever learn? And for all you one star reviewing sad people- maybe the truth hurt just a little too much. And by the way, Nancy does talk about air pollution and other things that effect our bodies(homeostasis). Read the book before you right a false statement. I made the decision to change my life to health. Maybe you will too..

are writing on this subject. Read _The Yeast Connection_, by Dr. William Crook (and _The Yeast Connection and the Woman_, _The Body Ecology Diet_, by Donna Gates, _The Food Doctor_, by Vicki Edgson Dipion and Ian Marber Dipion. Also, _Potatoes, Not Prozac_.

The author does seem bent on this one cause and, therefore, many of the conclusions feel incomplete. There is much good in this book. Especially the list and categories of foods.

Take it from one who lost most of the "evil" symptoms of sugar poisoning by eliminating it for one year. Thought I was becoming diabetic, passed out almost every afternoon and woke up with a hangover, had symptoms of MS, had a red rash on my face, itched all over, ached all over, cried all the time, had symptoms of bipolar disorder. You name it. They all disappear in my life when the sugar does.

If you suspect you have a problem read any book on the symptoms of sugar addiction.
