Did This Woman's Diet Cause A Seizure -- Then Dilantin?

Here and there, on this web site, I've included the actual correspondence, back and forth, between me, Karl Loren, and some person who originally wrote to me with some question. When I responded to that question, often with my own questions, I often then received further correspondence.  In some cases the dialogue may have gone on for many, many messages.  When I quote one of these dialogues I edit out the actual name and any words that might serve to identify the other person -- but the words are absolutely true and accurate.  I find these dialogues to be very helpful to me -- in understanding what people are doing in regard to health, and how I can better understand their situations.  I hope you will find this instructive, too.

This dialogue, like most on my web sites, shows MY comments in BLUE while the other person's words are in black

Dear Karl,

I can not believe how easy it was to find out this information you provided regarding Epilepsy.

I came acrose your website by using ask.com.  I then plugged in the word epilepsy and found it!  I found your website very informative perhaps too much because I am extremely scared right now.

I am a 28 year old female who just had a baby 4 weeks ago who was told two days ago that I had a seizure.  My husband witnessed this seizure.  I do not recall any part of it.  I came out of it to find a police officer and EMT in my bedroom.  I was taken to the emergency room where they took a bunch of blood work (all was normal) and a head ct (normal) and discharged a couple of hours later.  I then made an appointment with my primary doctor and a neurologist.  The neurologist did a series of tests (hand eye coordination tests) and everything was fine.  He told me I need to go for an MRI and a EEG - so I am waiting for an appointment.  In the meanwhile, he prescribed DILANTIN.  I know you are not a fan of the drug.  I wanted to do some research to know what I am putting in my body.  The doctor has instructed me to take this pill 3 times a day (100 MG).  However, the first day he told me to take 10 PILLS!  Then begin to take three a day.  I am on my second day now.  I feel light headed and am extremely concerned because I have a 4 week old infant to take care of.  Just 4 weeks ago I was the happiest person in the world now I feel like I have been handed a death sentence.

My question to you is:  I know you are against this drug.

Could you please give me your opion on the dosage prescribed to me?  Is three a day a lot?

Can this drug cause liver damage?

The doctor told me I would need to be on this for two years.  I was reading some comments above where people indicated they needed to be on this for 20 years?

Is this drug like a catch 22?  Helps with one thing and creates other problems?  I am so upset  I do not know what to do.

I started getting these "epsidodes" about a year and half ago.  I never had a seizure like this past one.  My husband told me that he woke to the bed shaking.  I was falling out of the bed, my body was stiff and my eyes were open but I was unconscious and blue.  He also told me I tried to bite his are. The next day my jaw was hurting real bad.  Prior to this episode for the past year and half I would have these "zoning" out episodes.  I would be in this complete daze for a minute or two.  (nobody could tell).  I would realize what was happening.  I never did anything about this because I did not want anyone to think I was crazy.  I also did not know to explain it.  The doctors are telling me that these were mild seizures I was having.

I find the timing strange in all of this.  My husband and I moved into our house a year and half ago.  We have power lines (LIPA) leaning in the direction of our house.  Could this have caused it?  Could this make it worse?  I will sell my house tomorrow  if  that means I can have a normal live.  My mom (adopted mom)passed away a year and half ago (she battled lung cancer).  Could this possibly be emotional?

I would greatly appreciate a response.

Sincerely,

Mary

Dear Mary,
I feel like the conservative dad whose 17 year old daughter says, "Dad, can I move in with Bill?  We are not going to be married, but we just want to live together for a while."
Well, Mary, I can't tell people that all drugs are bad without then giving some alternative.
I think that dosage of Dilantin is enormous -- and a new mother -- and no test showed any problem?
So, you had one "episode" of some sort -- could it have been gas from eating too many hot dogs?  I joke, but that seems a might slim reason to take such a massive dose of dilantin.
I would suggest, strongly, that you look for another doctor -- another opinion -- and look for a doctor who is known as an "alternative" doctor -- a naturopath, perhaps even a DO??, or some one who will tell you, on the phone, that he doesn't like to prescribe Dilantin, and looks as hard as he can to be sure it is indicated, and looks every harder for an alternative.
Then, start to look at your diet.
I have been researching diet more intensively than any other subject.  I'm not done, but I feel very confident in suggesting that you can beat ANY disease or health problem with the right diet.
I'm ready to send you very specific advice on diet, but first ask you to write back with what your current diet is -- and whether you are breastfeeding -- and the health of your baby.
Also, what type of "pressure" do you have from husband, family, about the drug??
Let me know.
I would like to help.

Karl Loren

Dear Karl,

Thank you so much for responding so quickly.  I really do appreciate it.   I
feel like nobody understands how I feel.  Why should I just put these pills
into my body without knowing what it is.  My husband thinks I should take the
medicine.   He keeps saying that he never wants to see me like that again.
It was very scary for him.  My husband is also concerned  that this could of
happened while I was home alone with our  baby.  I understand these points.  I
am going to get another opinion.

I did not go for MRI or EEG yet.  I am hoping to go sometime next week.  I
asked my doctor if these tests could come back normal?  He replied "yes".  I
then asked what happens next?  He said you still stay on the dilantin.  Is
the doctor then assuming it was a seizure and that I have epilepsy?  Is there
a test out there that can tell me for sure what happened?  Or is it process of
elimination?

I did have a head CT while I was in the hospital - this was normal -  Would
this have shown something?  The hospital also did blood work:
NA,CI,K,CO2,GLUCOSE,BUN LFT'S, URIC ACID.  I was told this was all fine.  I
have no idea what it means.  Should this have shown something?

I am extremely nervous to take this medicine.  My diet now that the baby is
here is not so great (I really watched while I was pregnant).  I had given up
caffeine for 9 months and had a good breakfast everyday.

Now that I have a baby and no time, I tend to skip breakfast - have a cup of
coffee with CAFFEINE and have my first meal around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
I eat whatever I can find ( soup, french fries, something frozen, left overs
from the night before) . For dinner, I always have a meat, veggie and a
starch.  I eat red meats, pork, chicken, pastas.

I am probably about 20 pounds overweight (not due to the baby)  I was
overweight before I got pregnant.  I lost the pregnancy weight already.

NO I AM NOT BREASTFEEDING!.  My baby is very healthy and doing wonderful!

I wanted to ask you your opinion on two items:  Could labor/giving birth have
had anything to do with this?  I was talking to someone yesterday.  Same
thing happened after she gave birth.  I gave birth 4 weeks ago.

Could being extremely tired have had anything to do with this?  I have been
exhausted since the baby was born.  In the past, I required a lot of sleep (
8 -10 hours each night).  I am lucky if I get 3-4.

Thank you very much for your help and support.

Sincerely,

Mary

Dear Mary,

I wonder if I have already answered this?  normally I respond quickly, but I don't recall answering, so I'll write now.
Fortunately, I am not a doctor.  Otherwise I don't think I could be as helpful because I would be all tied up with the fixed opinions and false data they have to deal with.
So, I don't try to understand a great deal of medical stuff.
I don't know what your doctor is assuming, but I do think it is a minimum demand on him that he answer that and other questions.
Doctors are very unwilling to take much time to educate patients -- they feel they don't get paid for that -- but you still have a right to know what they are doing to your body -- and why.
I would not know what tests detect epilepsy.
Same for those blood tests -- I don't try to understand very many of them.
I do feel strongly that even epilepsy, if you have it, can be completely cured by proper diet.
I answer so many eMails that I don't recall what people have said, but I assume that I asked you what your diet is, and that I have not yet told you what my diet suggestions are?
Well, breakfast is your most important meal of the day -- and it must include protein.  Your breakfast is deadly -- all the more because there was the drastic change after giving birth.
Is it possible that your seizure (??) was after you had gotten off the good diet?
It IS possible, in my opinion, for a bad diet to cause every disease known to man --including seizures.
Mary, if I were shooting from the hip, I would think that coffee ONLY for breakfast, and no meal until 2 PM would guarantee a severe health problem -- and you might just have demonstrated that with the seizure.
If you were my wife, or my mother, I would be willing to strongly suggest stop the Dilantin after you have been on my diet for a few days.  In other words, I am confident enough to ask someone very close to me to get off Dilantin. But, I also suggest that it is YOUR decision, and that even a husband has no right to demand you take a drug.
My diet?  It is a diet, first, of stuff to NOT eat, then a diet of stuff TO eat, and finally it goes to an extreme which you might not be ready for, but that I am on.  They key is protein -- very few people eat enough proteins -- and breakfast -- very few people eat a good breakfast.  You need these changes.
I'll paste in the introduction to my diet as I finish my personal message.
If you are not breastfeeding, then, my opinion, is that dad has about as much responsibility for bottle-feeding the baby during the night as you do.
The combination of good diet before birth, then sudden terrible diet, extra duty caring for a baby, and (if true) that you are the only one to do the care during the night??  Those all add up to seizure to me -- remembering that I am not a doctor.
This seems all so clear to me now, Mary, and I do hope you will write back to tell me what you think of the diet and what else is happening.
I would like to help.
Karl Loren

Dear Mary,
I've had some further thoughts.
I didn't mention it, but I think breastfeeding is vital for any baby.  I suppose it is too late?  Or not?
Did someone put pressure on you to NOT breastfeed -0- a husband or doctor.  if so, they are wrong.
Also you should get some Vitamin B6 as soon as possible -- take at least 100 mg per day -- B6 is a natural alternative for dilantin.
Finally, if you are getting only 3-4 hours of sleep, it is possible the baby is not getting proper food.
I think the commercial baby formulas are terrible -- they are high in sugar and low in protein.
Mother's milk is best.
I have another formula to offer, if you write to ask -- one not available for sale, but very healthy -0- provides the needed proteins for a baby.
Most babies grow up fat and unhealthy.
Regards,
Karl Loren
