Odyssey Clinical Studies opened in July, 1998 and quickly became a haven for patients suffering heavy metal intoxication. Since that time, we have experienced phenomenal growth in direct patient care and interest in our treatment program. We maintain this website to share our findings, success stories, and treatment plans for heavy metal detoxification. We treat mercury poisoning, amalgam poisoning, copper and other heavy metals toxicity.
Amalgams in teeth contain over 50 percent mercury. The remainder is made up of silver and sometimes tin or aluminum. The mercury escapes the amalgam as a vapor and is breathed into the body of the person carrying the amalgam.
People suffer widely varying symptoms in response to mercury or other metal poisoning. And the reason we target mercury, is that it is the most common toxicity that most people have.

is Jimmie's story
Jimmie is a 40-something female who suffered from extreme fatigue that started over 15 years ago.
In 1982 she began to notice some short-term memory loss and a lower level of energy than she had been accustomed to. She noticed after several months that her output at work was less than the rigorous standards she had set for herself. This continued and worsened over several years, during which time she suffered repeatedly from colds and flu.
After several years, she began to experience dramatic physical symptoms. While standing or walking her legs would "turn to mush" and completely give out.
"Soon I shortened my work hours," she said. "And oftentimes I would lie down on the floor of my office between appointments. Here I was, someone who was used to making complicated 5-year projections for my clients, and I couldn’t add up my checkbook anymore."
In 1994 she sold her home and took an emergency medical leave from her work. She began a long process of testing for whatever ailments her doctor could think of to test for. But the results of all her tests were normal.
By this time, she had forgotten how to cook and would often lose her way going to the store and back home. Soon, she found it increasingly difficult to find a doctor that would take her seriously. She began to hear labels of "lazy" and "unmotivated". She wasn’t sleeping well anymore.
Through a series of events she met with Dr. David H. Saxon of Odyssey Clinical Studies in August of 1998. "He told me he wanted to help," she remembers "and I started crying. Here, at last was someone who would listen to what I had to say, and who took me seriously."
Through more tests, Dr. Saxon discovered that Jimmie was seriously malnourished due to an extremely high level of mercury, iron, and cadmium in her system. She was remarkably sensitive to the chemicals overloading her system and at first was even unable to tolerate the chemical therapy given intravenously to combat her metal intoxication. Along with treatment, she receives nutrient IV’s to help replenish her system.
Jimmie surmises that her exposure to mercury came from the well water she used in her first home. It was discovered years later that it was only a few dozen feet away from an abandoned and covered over toxic waste site.
Only time will tell how much of her previous activity Jimmie will regain. Sometimes, if the toxicity continues for years, a few of its effects will be irreversible.

What
do we use to treat people who are toxic?
DMPS is used for the challenge tests which tell us what heavy metals are present in the body and by what concentrations. In a few cases, DMPS is also used to detoxify the system.
In most cases, we recommend a detoxifying regimen using natural chelators and a modified diet. We always urge our patients to have their amalgams removed by a dentist who will follow a safe protocol for the removal.

about side effects of DMPS?
Some side effects have been noted in the use of DMPS, including exacerbation of current symptoms and:
With respect to side effects, a causal relationship to
DMPS was demonstrated in a few cases. Furthermore, it must be considered that
the undesirable effects could also be a reaction to the heavy metal
intoxication. Considering the fact that the described observations are based on
30 years of worldwide experience with DMPS, it is appropriate to say that
undesirable reactions to IV administration of DMPS are possible, but with
careful monitoring these incidences will be infrequent.

Some of our patients use the word, "elation" to describe what they feel when they walk away from their first dental appointment removing amalgam from their teeth. It takes many weeks to have all the dental work done that many people need. However, the sooner it is done, the better you will feel.
Your symptoms will begin to shift and some will get better while others will worsen. It will take about four months for all the free-floating mercury to leave your body. At this point, however, it still may be present in your brain, liver, and other soft body tissue.
Much of that will depend on how long you have been sick, how much mercury you are storing in your body, and how you react to the treatment. You will most likely feel some improvements within a few days to about 2 weeks. Remember, though, that most patients will conclude their therapy anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Your symptoms will gradually lessen over the duration of your treatment.
In many cases, yes. However, many people suffer the destruction of mercury toxicity for years and years. Some of that damage, for instance to your liver or brain, may not be 100 percent recovered. Others find that their food intolerances will not be completely remedied. Only time will answer that question.
Sometimes your symptoms will appear to worsen for a few days as the mercury mobilizes and you should be carefully monitored for increased excretion of essential trace elements, cardiovascular reactions--dizziness, weakness, nausea, heart palpitations, and a feeling of tightness in the chest, and skin reactions. In some cases, patients exhibit an allergic reaction to the treatment. These patients are given a modified protocol.
Yes, absolutely. DMPS does a wonderful job of ridding your system of mercury, however, it will also take out essential trace elements and nutrients such as copper and zinc, that need to be replaced. In addition, your body may be suffering malnutrition due to the mercury intoxication and must be supported nutritionally while you are undergoing therapy.
One way to know if you are nearing the end of treatment will be from subsequent urine tests. When the level of mercury in urine tests is undetectable, then you no longer need detoxification treatment. However, you might need further nutritional support.
