What is an Angiogram?

What is an Angiogram?

Definition
An angiogram is a test that uses dye to look inside blood vessels in order to diagnose or treat lesions involving the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord.

How to prepare for your angiogram?
On the day of your test, you should have nothing to eat or drink past the night before. If the test is done later in the day, you may have clear liquids (ie. broth, jello, juice, no coffee) from the midnight before until early morning (4 am) and no liquids after that. You may take your routine medications with a little sip of water the morning of your test.

How is the angiogram done?
The test will be done in the Department of Radiology on the 3rd floor. Once in the room, you will be placed on a table with a soft foamy mattress. You will have a small portion of hair around your pubic area shaved. This area will then be washed with a brown soapy solution (Betadine). A needle will be inserted into the veins of the arm so that you can have fluids and medication during the test. The pulse points on your feet will be checked before and after the procedure to check circulation. Medication will be given to help you relax, but you will remain awake.
Little pads will be placed on your chest so that we may monitor your heart rate. A blood pressure cuff will be placed on your right arm and will cycle on and off every five minutes automatically. Once all of this has been completed, the sterile drapes will be placed over the top of your body. The groin area will then be numbed with novacaine via injection and a puncture will be made into the main artery in the groin (femoral artery). A catheter will be inserted into the femoral artery and threaded up into the brain or spinal cord. Dye is injected so that we may visualize the inside of the blood vessels and take pictures. These pictures will be photographed so that your doctor may look at them. When the dye is injected, you may feel a warm sensation. The technicians in the room will tell you where you might experience this.

What happens after the angiogram?
Once all the pictures aretaken, the catheter will then be removed and pressure will be applied to your groin area for 20 minutes. You will then be escorted back to your room and asked to lie still for six hours not bending your leg or lifting your head. This is so that the area where the artery was punctured has time to heal. Your nurse will closely monitor your blood pressure, pulse points and groin sites for the next two hours. You may resume your diet and you will be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids which will help flush the dye from your system. Your doctor will inform you of the results of the angiogram.
If you experience any oozing or bleeding from the groin, please call your nurse
immediately. You may experience a little lump at the site of the puncture. This
is normal.
