Open MRI

OPEN MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING The only hospital-based Open MRI in the region

What is magnetic Resonance Imaging?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a tool that has revolutionized the field of diagnostic radiology. MRI uses radio waves and a magnetic field to procedure two - or three-dimensional images of internal body structures. An MRI is a painless procedure that can see through bone and clearly map out soft tissues, producing images that are extremely precise without exposing patients to radiation or radioactive solutions. An MRI can provide physicians with vital information to diagnose diseases or disorders so that proper treatment can be initiated promptly, often eliminating the need for more invasive procedures.

Our Open MRI is an advanced superconducting MRI that is open on all sides. This differs from the traditional form of MRI, which requires patients to lie inside an open-ended cylinder.

Why Open MRI?

MRI is the he preferred diagnostic procedure for many conditions. The test can produce exquisitely detailed views of the body, including the brain, spinal cord, heart and surrounding blood vessels, muscles and joints, abdomen, pelvis and neck. Englewood's OPEN MRI is ideal for:

Why MRI at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center?

Englewood Hospital and Medical Center's Open MRI is the only hospital-based machine in the area. It is the first in a new generation of open magnet technology. It has the highest field-strength of any open magnet. The opening is the largest of any Open MRI. It is especially ideal for larger patients, children and for people with claustrophobia.

Highly trained MRI technologists and Board-certified and fellowship-trained radiologists understand patient anxieties and go the extra mile to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

What to Expect?

Most scans take 30 to 90 minutes. Patients must lie still for the duration of the test on a comfortably padded table.

Preparing for an Open MRI

There's usually no special preparation necessary before having an MRI. Most patients are not required to restrict food or drink before the procedure. Patients will be asked to remove all metallic objects, such as jewelry, glasses and clothing with zippers, before the procedure.

Some people should not have an MRI. Although there is no evidence that a hazard exists, MRI is generally not advisable during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. However in consultation with the obstetrician, in certain critical cases, an MRI scan may be recommended. braces or a permanent dental bridge may distort images that are taken around the mouth. People with metal implants, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips or implanted stimulating devices cannot have an MRI. Patients should discuss any of these health issues with their doctor.
