Fact Sheet: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) œ
Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) is a method for taking pictures of the inside of your body without
radiation. MRI images are made by placing the body in a strong magnetic field.
An MRI is most often used to diagnose
brain and nervous system problems; bone, joint and muscle disorders; tumors;
certain heart and blood vessel diseases; or cancer of the reproductive organs,
liver, kidneys, lymph nodes, bladder, pancreas or vocal cords.
An MRI is done in a special MRI facility
which may be part of a larger healthcare complex or may be free-standing.
At the MRI facility, you will be asked to remove all metal objects (for
example, keys, money, hair pins, glasses, jewelry, non-permanent dentures, bank
or charge cards with magnetic strips) because of the strong magnetic field in
the MRI scanner. Tell your doctor and the MRI technologist if you have any
metallic joint replacements, bone plates, a heart pacemaker, neuro-stimulator,
cochlear implant, metal objects in the eye, metal aneurysm clips, or other metal
devices. Be sure to inform your doctor if you think you might be pregnant.
A technologist helps you lie flat on a
narrow bed. You may be provided with headphones or earplugs to muffle the sounds
of the machine and to allow you to talk with the technologist. Once you are
positioned, the table you are lying on will slide into the magnet. Once inside,
you may not see anyone, but you will be able to speak with the staff any time.
It's important to lie very still during the scan so the pictures are clear. MRI
is a painless procedure. You will hear a variety of loud noises from the machine
such as hums and clicks or banging noises. The exam takes a half-hour or more.
The radiologist (a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis of disease using
various images of the body) reviews the pictures and decides if more are needed.
After the scan is finished, and all the pictures are reviewed, you are free to
leave. Results are sent to your doctor and will be reviewed with you.
There are no known side effects. As
always, if you have any specific questions or concerns, you should discuss them
with your doctor or nurse practitioner.
